UNSER DEUTSCHLANDMÄRCHEN

A mother and son go through their life together one more time, through their German fairytale which is everything but a fairytale. On a search for their own identity, their own language, their own space, Fatma and Dinçer fight through unforgiving conditions, with and against each other, between deep affection and angry reckoning. Honoured with the 2023 Leipzig Book Fair Prize, Unser Deutschlandmärchen (Our German Fairytale), the debut novel by Dinçer Güçyeter, born in Nettetal in 1979, weaves together motifs from both his life story and his mother’s, who came to Germany from Turkey as a guest worker in the 60s. Director Hakan Savaş Mican tells this unusually frank and touching family history as a sumptuous musical journey. Two incredibly strong people move between two unreachable homelands.
