This eight-part film series brings together selected works about former dormitory residents, their daughters, other guest workers from the first generation and those who witnessed that era. Some of these films, documentaries and works for television, most of which were produced in the 1970s and 1980s, are being screened publicly for the first time in decades. All screenings will also feature members of the cast and crew, as well as special guests. In addition, as part of the exhibition, we will show a programme of other rare films made between 1969 and 2023 in a loop on the screen in the Roter Salon every day during opening hours.
Made by Hakan Savaş Mican, Ayşe Polat, Sema Poyraz, Helma Sanders-Brahms and Ayhan Salar, among others, these works expand our breadth of cinematic, historic and human references and deal with the topics of work, life and resistance, depicting the second and third generations’ lives in Germany through fiction and documentary. They stand for the thematic and formal range of migrant and post-migrant cinema.
