One hundred years after Herwarth Walden's first and last »Deutscher Herbstsalon« in 1913, Shermin Langhoff began her tenure as artistic director of the Maxim Gorki Theatre with the first Berliner Herbstsalon in 2013. Now she’s launching her final season at the Gorki with the 7th Berliner Herbstsalon. For her farewell, she has invited both long-term collaborators and new artists to the Berliner Herbstsalon. They will use old and new works to, in light of the present, reflect on, reclassify and (re)imagine for the future the critical art practices, struggles and resistances which were negotiated over this period. The Herbstsalon begins with the opening of the exhibition located throughout the Gorki, in the Palais am Festungsgraben, the Gorki Kiosk and outdoor spaces. On the Gorki mainstage the salon opens with the world premiere of Ersan Mondtag's production of Das Rote Haus. The building on Berlin's Stresemannstraße 30 was once the Telefunken company dormitory. The women who lived here came from Turkey in the 1960s and 70s to start their new lives in Berlin. The production is based on their stories and histories. There have always been people who try to insult the Maxim Gorki Theatre by calling it a red house. For us, it is a badge of honour. Even the Sing-Akademie, which today’s Maxim Gorki Theatre was built to house, was revolutionary. It was the first choral association in which men and women sang together. Worldwide. In 1848, after the March revolution, the Prussian National Assembly met in these rooms. We will tell you the rest of the (hi)story at ЯE:IMAGINE: THE RED HOUSE from 2/October to 30/November 2025.
