Houses without doors // Manazil Bela Abwab

Film by Avo Kaprealian

From the balcony of his parents' apartment in Aleppo's Midan neighbourhood, Avo Kaprealian documented everyday life in the streets and a sense of approaching civil war. Midan is mainly inhabited by descendants of survivors of the Armenian genocide, who settled in Aleppo after escaping from their homeland. When the fighting penetrated Kaprealian's road, he moved his camera into the apartment and began filming the everyday life of the family and how they handled the gunfire, snipers and blackouts. His film, which was screened at the Berlinale in 2016, documents the family drama of the Armenians in Syria that's now repeating itself.
