Studio Dietrich&Winter

studio dietrich&winter consists of Karl Dietrich and Joel T. Winter, who have been developing joint projects since 2023. They combine their different backgrounds—from theater painting and carpentry to film studies and music videos—to create a shared visual language. Karl Dietrich trained as a theater painter and carpenter and, via the Volksbühne, went on to spend two years as an assistant at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. Joel Winter first studied film studies and worked in parallel on music videos and set design for advertising and shopfitting. This was followed by studies in production design in Silke Fischer's class at the ZHdK in Zurich. During this time, studio dietrich&winter created their first joint work. Their works arise from an interest in urban phenomena and the processes of modern urban spaces, as well as functional materials. They develop spaces that interweave real places and abstract elements. Graphic and typographic elements are part of their design language.

They have collaborated on projects at the Berliner Ensemble, the Staatstheater Hannover, the Volkstheater Rostock, the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, the Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach, the Schauspielhaus Bochum, and the Staatstheater Kassel, among others. They also designed the set for the diploma film Wie war dein Tag? (How was your day?) by Kim Gabbi, which premiered at the Max Ophüls Film Festival in 2024 and was nominated for the First Steps Awards in 2025. studio dietrich&winter collaborated with the Gorki Theater on the productions FREMDBRASCH – DAS ALTE GEHT NICHT UND DAS NEUE AUCH NICHT and EAST SIDE STORY – A GERMAN JEWSICAL.
