Murat Mahmutyazıcıoğlu

Playwright Murat Mahmutyazıcıoğlu was born in 1979 in Kütahya. He initially studied interior design at Marmara University. From 2005-2008 he completed his training as an actor with Studio Oyuncuları, and then studied film and dramaturgy at Kadir Has University.


He directed his debut play Şekersiz (Without Sugar) at the Yanetki theatre in 2003, performing in it as well.


His piece Fü celebrated its premiere in May 2014 at the International Istanbul Theatre Festival and was then performed several times on the Ikincikat stage and in other theatres over the 2014-2015 season.


In August 2016, he founded the Bam theatre. With the same team, he produced the play Sen İstanbul'dan daha güzelsin (You're more beautiful than Istanbul), which he wrote and directed himself, and was honoured with Afife and TEB (Tiyatro Elestirmenleri Birligi) awards as Turkey's playwright of the year.


His latest play Sevmekten öldü desinler (It may be said he died of love) is being performed at Kadıköy Emek Tiyatrosu.


In the spring of 2017, two weeks before the referendum on the introduction of the presidential system, Mahmutyazıcıoğlu participated in the 60pages writers' workshop in Istanbul. His memoir Bis zum Sonnenaufgang ist es noch eine Weile (It's still a while until dawn) was produced in this workshop in Turkish, and is soon to be released in German.
