The Syrian author and director Waël Ali was born in 1979 and is now one of the most
renowned Syrian directors of the younger generation. In 2004 he graduated from the
Higher Institute of Performing Arts in Damascus. He continued his studies in France,
where he completed a Master in Performing Arts at the Université Lumière Lyon.
His production "I do not remember" in 2014 was shown at the Maxim Gorki Theater,
Berlin; at the Toneelhuis, Antwerp and in the Festival Journées Thétrales de Carthage,
Tunisia, a.o.. The text of "I do not remember" was translated into Dutch and published by
Bebuquin / Moussem.
Since 2016, Waël Ali has been working with the theater artist Chrystèle Khodr. Together,
they developed the project "Under a Low Sky" in 2017, as a European co-production of
nine European festivals (Les Banks Publics, Marseille / Palais des Beaux Arts, Bozar,
Brussels / Shubbak, London / Dancing on the Edge , Amsterdam / Napoli Festival of
Theater, Naples / Kunstfest Weimar, a.o.)
