Mónika Lakatos

Mónika Lakatos (Budapest, 1978) is a Hungarian singer of Romani descent and the lead singer of the band Romengo, which plays original songs rooted in Olah Gypsy musical tradition. Her father, family members as well as members of her community taught her how to sing. Mónika was awarded the Anna Lindh-Prize at the 2007 Babel Med Festival, received the Parallel Culture Award at Mediawave Festival 2013 and in 2017, her solo album Romanimo was selected for World Music Charts Europe’s top five. With her natural talent and mesmerizing voice, she became the first artist of Romani descent to receive the WOMEX Award in 2020.
