Angela Schanelec

born in Aalen in 1962. Completed her acting studies at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. She then worked as a theatre actor until 1991, with engagements at the Schauspiel Köln, Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin and Schauspielhaus Bochum. In 1990 she began studying directing for film at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin, which she graduated from with the equivalent of a master's degree in 1995. She's worked as a freelance film director and theatre translator ever since. In 2005 she was awarded the Preis der deutschen Filmkritik for best screenplay for her film Marseille. She contributed the chapter titled Erster Tag to the anthology film Deutschland 09. Her feature film Orly was screened as part of the 2010 Berlinale Forum.
