In her intervention Before They Named Us, Lucero Hernández Valadez questions identity-based attributions and symbolic violence. At the Kiosk for a Magic Future, a selection of mask objects created by the artist is presented and activated through a performative, ritual act. Wearing a mask made of willow blossoms inspired by medieval masks of shame and a robe embroidered with stars, the artist transforms shame into remembrance and vulnerability into resilience in her performance. Edible sugar masks, created in collaboration with Mexican artisans to convey knowledge surrounding Día de Muertos, are shared with the audience as sweet, ephemeral offerings.
