AND WHAT ABOUT ARTSAKH

Talk

On September 19th, 2023, Azerbaijani troops invaded the de facto Republic of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh and, through a military offensive that lasted just 24 hours, forced the 120,000 Armenian residents to flee. With this invasion, Azerbaijan – after 30 years of failed negotiations and ongoing fighting, the most recent being the six-week war in autumn 2020 – finally achieved its goals: on January 1st, 2024, all of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh’s state institutions were dissolved. Again and again, observers spoke of ethnic cleansing in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh, which began with the ten-month blockade of the Lachin corridor – the only road connecting Armenia and Artsakh.

In this discussion OFELIA MAGHAKYAN, ANI MENUA and MARSPET MOVISYAN address the historical roots of the conflict and therefore the continuities of systematic forced displacement and elimination of Armenian identity in the region, especially considering the context of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire and present-day Turkey’s denial of it.

Moderator: ANAHIT BAGRADJANS

The discussion will be held in German.
