Anta Helena Recke

Anta Helena Recke works as a director, dramaturg, conceptual artist and author of both fiction and non-fiction. She studied directing at the University of Hildesheim and was an assistant director at the Münchner Kammerspiele from 2015-2017, where she worked with directors such as Susanne Kennedy and Philippe Quesne. In Theater heute’s critics poll, she was chosen as young artist of the year for 2018. In 2019 she received the ITI Germany prize and participated in the Vila Sul residency programme at the Goethe-Institut in Salvador de Bahia. Her productions of MITTELREICH and Die Kränkungen der Menschheit, which address colonial amnesia and whiteness in Germany, among many other aspects, were invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen and radikal jung festivals in both 2018 and 2020. In 2020 she received the Tabori Prize from the Fonds Darstellende Künste. She is the co-director of the Deutsches Museum für Schwarze Unterhaltung und Black Music and staged her first work at the Gorki with the premiere of Olivia Wenzel’s debut novel 1000 Serpentinen Angst.
